Automobile Technician

Requirement

  • Age: Between 16 & 22 years
  • Education: Passed 06 subjects at the G.C.E. (O/L) Examination including Sinhala/Tamil language (Medium of Instruction) and Mathematics in one sitting.

First Year

Basic Training at CGTTI: Building Foundations for Excellence

Embark on your technical journey with our foundational Basic Training course at Ceylon German Technical Training Institute (CGTTI). This comprehensive program is designed to equip apprentices with essential skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for success in various technical trades.

Course Highlights:

  1. Introduction to Safety and Tools:
    • Safety takes precedence as trainees are introduced to the basics of workshop safety protocols.
    • Learn the fundamentals of measuring, marking, and the proper use of various hand tools.
  2. Bench Fitting Work:
    • Engage in hands-on bench fitting work at our basic workshop, honing your skills in precision workmanship.
    • Develop accuracy, punctuality, and cleanliness in your work, setting the foundation for disciplined craftsmanship.
  3. Physical Exercises:
    • Start each day with physical exercises, promoting discipline, motivation, and a healthy mindset for the day’s tasks.
  4. Tool Familiarity:
    • Gain familiarity with essential hand tools, power tools, and instruments used in various trades.
    • Learn the proper handling and application of files, hand and power hacksaws, chisels, drills, riveting tools, taps, dies, reamers, spanners, hammers, screwdrivers, center punches, and various measuring instruments.
  5. Hands-On Project:
    • Undertake a practical project – the production of a vice – serving as a tangible memento of your achievements during the basic training.
    • Apply acquired skills to create a functional and useful tool.

During this foundational stage of training, emphasis is placed on cultivating a mindset of:

  • Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and organized workspace, promoting a professional approach to craftsmanship.
  • Tool Maintenance: Learn the importance of proper tool, machine, and instrument maintenance to ensure longevity and optimal performance.
  • Preventing Accidents: Acquire awareness and practices to prevent work-related accidents, prioritizing safety in all aspects of training.

Second Year

Training in Automobile section via cutaway models and computer based simulators, dismantling and assembling of units and subunits of motor vehicles

  • Engine: History of Automobile, Tools and Equipments, Workshop Safety, Type of Engines and related parts, Fuel Supply System (petrol, diesel gas), Starting System.
  • Chassis: Clutch, Manual Gearbox, Front & Rear Axles, Assembling of Brake system (pneumatic & hydraulic), Steering System, Suspension System.
  • Auto Electrical: Starting System, Electric System, Charging System, Battery maintenance.

Third Year

  1. Production training in heavy vehicles at Chassis section. (Overhauling and assembling of Clutch, Automatic and Manual gearboxes, Differential, Front axle, Rear axle, Manual and Power assisted steering, Wheel & Tyres, Suspension)

Chassis, Clutch, Conventional Gearbox, Propeller Shaft and Joints, Brake, Steering. – (04 Months)

2. Production training in Engine Section. (dismantling, inspection, overhauling and assembling of Diesel Engines and Fuel Injection Pumps, timing, mounting and testing)

Parts of the Engine, Engine Assembling, Cooling and Lubrication Systems, Repairing sub units (cylinder head, water pump, oil pump, oil filter and oil cooler) – (04 Months)

3.Production training in light vehicles at Vehicle Repair Section (running repairs, servicing, Emission testing. overhauling of engine, transmission, brake and suspension) 

Intake Air System, Exhaust System, Carburettor, Wheel Alignment – (02 Months)

4.Training in Automobile Electronics Training Section via simulators, EFI, ABS, SRS, Vehicle Stable Control System and fault diagnosing by using Auto Scanners.

Electronic Ignition System, Fuel Injection System, Emission Control, Common Rail Electronic Diesel Supply System. – (02 Months)

 

Final Year

  • Training in running repairs on buses belongs to Sri Lanka Central Transport Board (SLCTB) Omnibus Depots – 06 Months
  • Training in running repairs on light and heavy vehicles at state organizations and private companies – 06 Months 

Revision and Final Evaluation

Theory: Theoretical lessons on workshop science, workshop calculation & technical drawing are conducted one day per week during the course. In addition English language classes are conducted for trainees.
