On the 23rd of January 2024, CGTTI celebrated two major milestones: the commencement of its 2024 intake of trainees and the opening of English Language Lab. This event marked a significant step towards enhancing technical education and language proficiency among Sri Lanka’s future workforce.
Welcoming the New Intake of Vocational Students
The ceremony kicked off with a warm welcome to the incoming batch of students. Among the distinguished guests was Honorable Deputy Minister of Vocational Education, Nalin Hewage, alongside industry leaders from Toyota Lanka, DIMO, Ansell Lanka, and several other prominent organizations. Their presence underscored the importance of industry collaboration in technical training and education.
The CGTTI has been at the forefront of producing highly skilled technical professionals for over 65 years. With more than 4,500 applicants competing for coveted spots in the institute, the students who made it through this rigorous selection process are embarking on a life-changing journey. The comprehensive training offered at CGTTI, spanning courses of 3 to 4 years, equips students with both technical expertise and vocational qualifications that are internationally recognized.
A New Milestone: The Inauguration of the English Language Lab
An exciting highlight of the event was the opening of the new English Language Lab. Supported by the GIZ, German Development Cooperation and VTSLII project, the lab aims to strengthen English proficiency among vocational students, a critical skill in today’s globalized job market. The lab, valued at over EUR 80,000, is a facility equipped with digital ESL (English as a Second Language) resources, interactive learning tools, and computers, allowing students to develop their language skills in a modern, engaging environment.
Key figures at the event, such as Fabio Gemano, the GIZ Head of Project for Vocational Training in Sri Lanka, emphasized the importance of language skills alongside technical training. The lab will provide 250 custom-made lessons covering both general and technical English, supporting students as they prepare for both local and international careers. Additionally, the lab offers self-study resources, BBC podcasts, and tools like graded readers with audio and video lessons, all aimed at enhancing student engagement and communication skills.
With new facilities, an expanding curriculum, and a growing focus on digital and renewable energy technologies, CGTTI is poised to remain a leader in vocational education in Sri Lanka. The institute’s focus on modern training methods, as seen with the introduction of digital IDs and a learning management system (LMS), aligns with the government’s digitalization policy, ensuring students are well-prepared for future job markets.
